Tuesday’s December 17 special festive edition of The Undateables delivered a real Christmas miracle on Channel 4. The Undateables at Christmas saw the return of fan-favourite singleton Richard Lawrence, who hates Christmas but decided to make a special effort this year. Along with volunteering at an elderly charity, Richard’s other big change was deciding to break his biggest dating rule. Yes, in an effort to find love for Christmas, Richard opted to increase his dating radius from five miles to eight miles.

The Undateables is a programme which supposedly challenges misconceived attitudes society holds about dating and disability . However, critics and harmful internet memes being produced based on clips of their behaviour) .
I watched the first episode of the new Undataebles series last week. As some one with a learning disability, I felt it really showed a positive image of people with a disability in their hunt to find love and relationships. I really want to praise Channel 4 for showing the new series. As someone with a learning disability, I think that people with a learning disability have a right to able to go out on dates, meet partners and to have relationships.
Often, on TV, people with a learning disability are shown in a certain way. I think having real people with disabilities dealing with real life issues proves those are just wrong. I also like the way that the people from the dating agencies support the people on the show to be positive about going on dates. I liked the poems that she wrote. They were about how she wanted to fall in love and get married. I could understand how she felt, because when I was growing up I wanted to have the same things as her.
As I use twitter a lot, I have seen that lots of celebrities and people in the public eye have said good things about the show and how much they liked it.

Subjects are followed as they seek love, often via dating agencies, and are typically shown preparing for and embarking on first dates with potential partners. Although the series ostensibly operates with the full co-operation of participants and their families many of whom are shown in interview scenarios , much criticism has been levelled at what some perceive as the condescendingly humorous tone adopted by the programme-makers.
This humour, however, takes two distinct forms.

Hayley Ostler, 29, runs a project where she plays Cupid to those who need a little help in the romance department…. Sitting on the edge of the sofa, I watched the young couple on TV. As they ate ice cream and made nervous small talk, I rooted for them. And when they later swapped numbers and kissed goodbye, I beamed with pride.
As a matchmaker for people with learning disabilities, I regularly help would-be boyfriends and girlfriends, like Luke and Alice, find love. That episode showed me phoning Luke, a member of the dating project I run, to suggest a date with Alice, also a member. After I showed them to their table, then sat at the other end of the restaurant in case they needed me, there were a few awkward silences. They just clicked. The fact he had a disability was never an issue to me.
I started off volunteering for the dating project eight years ago. I loved it from day one. At first, I helped the members put on shows. Social events are a big part of how the project is run — they help members get to know one another before going on dates. Blind dates would make some feel anxious, so this takes the pressure off.
THE UNDATEABLES AND DOCUMENTARY VOICE by Richard Hewett
Written by Beatriz Liberatti on March 4 Tobi Green-Adenowo, 26, who suffers from brittle bone disease, went on the show for a chance at dating but left with the dream of changing how disabled people of colour are represented in the media. One of the things I like about The Undateables, despite the name, is that it gives disabled people a space to fit in within media and make it what they want. After meeting up with a dating agency, Green was matched with Melvin, a retail assistant from West London.
Even though the experience was overwhelmingly positive, Green was unable to find love in The Undateables.

The Undateables is back for a seventh series. The award-winning dating show follows people living with a variety of different conditions through the highs and lows of finding love. It has proved to be a hugely popular ratings hit, with Channel 4 commissioning a further two series to follow on from this one. One of the reasons for the continued success is the genuine care and thought that goes into the matchmaking.
Over the years the show has resulted in many relationships, multiple weddings and even babies. Ostler played an on-screen role in series six of The Undateables, where she assisted Channel 4 in identifying potential romantic connections. So they need to be matched with someone with a similar level of life experience. So, yes, similar disabilities are important. Ostler explains that — while it is case-by-case depending on the personality of each individual — there are some disabilities that have the potential to match better than others.
Sometimes the person with Aspergers might be more sociable and actually bring the person with autism out of their shell a bit more.

Christian is sociable, handsome, with his own hair, and has been rejected by The Undateables twice. M y brother wants a girlfriend. He writes it on his Facebook wall and texts me most weeks to tell me this. Can you help find me a girlfriend? Christian is a catch. He lives on the seafront in Brighton and can deliver a commentary on Love Island better than any media person I know.
He has asked me to find him a dating site and set him up with a profile, which sounds simple enough — but the reality is different. Christian has a learning disability. As an adult who lives alone, who has no need for a care worker and enjoys a busy social life, Christian falls into a difficult gap in the dating scene.
